About Northwind Energy
Northwind Energy is Southwestern Ontario's engineering-focused small wind turbine company, combining international wind industry expertise with local manufacturing, installation, and support to help farms and rural businesses reduce their electricity costs.
"As someone who grew up in Windsor, I'm excited to bring the knowledge and experience gained in Europe's wind industry back home and help Ontario farmers and rural businesses lower their energy costs."
Northwind Energy was founded by Drew Gertz with a simple goal: bring practical, cost-effective wind energy solutions to farms and rural businesses in Southwestern Ontario.
Originally from Windsor, Ontario, Drew spent more than 15 years working in the European wind industry, gaining experience across every stage of wind turbine development—from aerodynamic design and structural analysis to certification and commercialization.
His career included four years at Siemens Wind Power in Denmark, followed by research work at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), before founding Northwind Engineering. Over the past decade, Northwind Engineering has provided design, simulation, analysis, and certification services for small wind turbines, contributing to more than 50 projects for over 20 clients around the world.
That experience has provided a deep understanding of what it takes to design, manufacture, install, and maintain reliable small wind turbines that deliver real economic value.
After returning to Windsor, Drew conducted an extensive analysis of the region's wind resource, electricity rates, incentive programs, and permitting requirements. The conclusion was clear: many farms and rural businesses have an excellent opportunity to reduce operating costs through well-designed small wind energy systems.
Northwind Energy was created to help realize that opportunity. By combining proven engineering expertise with local manufacturing, installation, and support wherever possible, the company aims to strengthen the regional economy while helping customers generate their own clean electricity and reduce their dependence on the grid.
Every project begins with a realistic assessment of the site's wind resource and expected financial return, ensuring that recommended solutions are practical, transparent, and tailored to the customer's needs.
